The town's folk have erected a Christmas tree to illuminate the chilly winter day. Shop windows are decorated for the season with Christmas trees and wreaths and garlands and many glowing candles. Each building is richly adorned with fancy windows and doors, and charming fences and wrought iron work. Picturesque lamp posts complete this lovely cityscape.

Stitches chosen to depict the buildings are appropriate both in color and size, and the texture seeks to express bricks and stucco. Much attention is given to small details which serve to make this a most winsome project.

Emerald Temple

From the mysterious island nation of Bali we have the shimmering many storied pagoda known here as the Emerald Temple. Rising toward the heavens on a small peninsula in a peaceful lagoon Emerald Temple evokes all the wonder of fabled Asian lands. The beauty of its pleasing shape is reflected in the calm of the waters beneath. We view the scene from behind a grove of bamboo trees.

The temple is interpreted in beautiful silks and metal threads. the palette is mostly monochromatic, ranging from the deepest emeralds through lively teal tones and shading into the palest of aquas for the sunset sky. the composition is cheered by a bit of yellow and gold. The temple iteslf is worked in diaper pattern couching on gold braided thread.

Travel is my passion, and the mystic lands of Asian beckon especially to me. Emerald Temple is the third in a series of embroideries expressing the Asian theme; the others are Amethyst Pavilion and Garnet Torii.
Garnet Torii /upload_images/needlework40_thumbnail.jpg
Kit Cost: $80.00
Proficiency Level: Intermediate
Ground: Congress Cloth
Size of Piece:  10
Length of Class: 2 days
Peaceful and serene, the famous Floating Torii, (a Japanese gate) at Myajima is interpreted in the loveliest silks and metal threads in a gorgeious garnet color scheme which ranges from the palest pinks to a deep true garnet.

The Torii itself first commands our attention as it is worked in French Flat Silk and Krienik Braid in a beautiful flat stitch which shows off the properties of each thread. The water is at high tide so the entire Torii is reflected in the lake beneath, by the clever use of the Gobelin Weave Stitch.

The mountains recede into the distance. These are interpreted by the choice of appropriate stitches, texture, and color value. Most spectacular , after the Torii itself, is the sky which is composed of a variety of tones and hues to depict the rising sun.
